Outdoor Pursuits Registration
Sign up for all Outdoor Pursuits courses and activities
in person
in the BOP Office, 38 East Gym.
Outdoor Pursuits offers both credit courses and non-credit activities. Credit courses can be used to fulfill your General Education requirements, while non-credit activities are informal opportunities to learn new skills and enjoy the outdoors.
All Outdoor Pursuits credit classes involve weekend field trips and/or overnight experiences. Our courses are designed to introduce the participants to new environments and adventure activities. Courses that require extended time in the field or that are designed for those with more skill or a higher level of physical condition are noted. All participants are required to register in person so that they have the best understanding of the time, lifestyle and personal commitment involved.
All courses have an additional fee that covers travel, group gear, equipment purchases, equipment repair, support staffing, permits and camping fees, as well as food and lodging in most cases.
Steps to register for a Continuing Education & Outreach credit course in Outdoor Pursuits:
- Read the on-line course description and review any pre-requisites needed.
- Be sure the weekend meeting times fit into your schedule in addition to the regular class periods.
- Review the credit course policies
- Review the refund & cancellation policies
- Download and fill out the required forms below. Be as complete and accurate as possible. Use your campus or local address. Initial the risks of the specific activity that you will be participating in.
Return these forms in person to the Outdoor Pursuits office, 38 East Gym along with a $25 non-refundable deposit*. This secures your spot on the course roster. Full payment is due by the Add Deadline (second week of the semester) when names will be forward to Student Accounts for delinquency. Classes are filled on a first-come first-served basis. A waiting list is generated as needed. (*Due to the use of independent contractors, a few courses offered require a higher non-refundable deposit amount and are noted as such).

In many cases, Outdoor Pursuits sponsored CEO courses have drop/add deadlines that differ from the University Registrar's deadlines because these are mini courses. Make sure you know the specific dates that the Outdoor Pursuits courses begin and end. Check our website for the mandatory weekend trips. You may add a course any time before the course begins!
To add a CEO course sponsored by BOP, students must register in person in the Outdoor Pursuits office, 38 East Gym and leave the non-refundable deposit. There are Acknowledgement of Risk and Medical History forms to complete.
Petitions forms are necessary to register for the BOP courses and must be signed by the Outdoor Pursuits director. However, our courses are limited in size for safety and environmental reasons. We will not compromise either. Sign up early. No priority will be given to class standing.
Registration begins with the Advance Registration period WITHOUT preference given to class standing. Registration continues until the class is full. A waiting list is generated as needed. True class enrollment is NOT necessarily reflected accurately on the Registrar's BU Brain website as BOP maintains the course roster.
To drop a BOP sponsored CEO course, you MUST notify both the Outdoor Pursuits office, 777-6414 and the Registrar's office (via BU Brain). No course drop is complete until you have spoken in person to the BOP director.
If you fail to attend a course for which you are registered, you will NOT be refunded any of the course fee and will have to incur late drop fees accessed by the Registrar's office.
If you drop a course due to medical reasons, documentation from a physician will be required. You will be charged a pro-rated fee to cover classes attended.
Our courses involve activities that can be affected by weather and other environmental conditions. Outdoor Pursuits will not give refunds for class delays, course or curriculum changes resulting from adverse weather conditions.
Refunds & Cancellations
Balances of the course fee are only refundable if
cancellation takes place 14 days in advance of the course; another student
replaces you in the course; for documented medical reasons; or withdrawal/departure
from Binghamton University.
If it is determined that a student does not have the pre-requisite ability (e.g. not a strong swimmer, fitness level below average) to participate safely in a course, the balance of the course fee will be refunded.
Those who act in an unsafe manner - whether physical or emotional - and pose a danger to themselves or others or who seriously impair the class' ability to achieve the objectives of the course will be removed from any course without refund.
Credit Course Policies Attendance & Grading
BOP courses are short-courses, therefore these classes have very
strict attendance policies so as to meet the University requirements
for credit hours. BOP does not have the capacity to offer make-ups.
Research papers do not replicate the performance of an activity or demonstrate
skill and will not be accepted.
BOP requires that students attend the first class meeting because of the critical logistics, policy and safety information that will be covered. If you do not show up for the first class you lose your right to retain your spot on the roster, and we may enroll another student in your place.
Students are expected to be on time, dressed appropriately, and be properly prepared with necessary supplies (lunches, water, raingear, etc.) for their courses. Prior proper planning prevents poor performance!
Although many of the BOP courses are graded as Pass/Fail, merely attending classes and field trips will not guarantee a passing mark. Students are expected to contribute to class presentations, observe safety procedures as outlined by the staff, demonstrate an acceptable level of skill proficiency, and complete all assignments by designated deadlines.
Because BOP courses involve participation in activities that require a progression of skill and group cooperation, your absence has a negative effect on safety and the class dynamic. Thus, if a student misses more than one class or a significant part of the progression that is deemed essential, the student will not be allowed to continue in the course due to risk management considerations.
Equipment Needed
Group gear for BOP courses is provided unless otherwise noted.
Typically, participants are provided with tents, tarps, packs, stoves,
cooking gear, canoes, kayaks, paddles, helmets and PFD's. A complete
personal equipment list is provided at the first class meeting.

expected to ride to and from classes and activities in the designated

activities. As such, the use of unprescribed drugs, alcohol and tobacco
during our programming is strictly prohibited. The use of cell phones and other personal electronics during class time is also prohibited.
Conduct Policy
The Outdoor Pursuits program expects that all students will participate

best effort, try new activities, work and travel as part of a group
and follow instructions, especially where safety is an issue.
Those who act in an unsafe manner - whether physical or emotional - and pose a danger to themselves or others will be removed from the course or outing. Binghamton Outdoor Pursuits (BOP) widely varied

Activity and Course Size
As part of our environmental ethic and for safety and educational purposes,

and permits for backcountry travel. Our goal is to
provide our students with the highest quality experience while ensuring
safety and minimum environmental impact.
Equipment Needed for BOP activities
For half-day and one-day outings, participants
are expected to dress appropriately for the weather and bring water bottles,
snacks or a lunch. For multi-day trips, a complete personal equipment

is provided unless otherwise noted. Typically, participants are provided
