Binghamton University has approximately 350 acres of natural areas, including 190 acres of designated Nature Preserve. Around 30 acres of the Nature Preserve are beaver-created wetlands that greatly increase the animal and plant diversity of the preserve. Overall, the Nature Preserve, home to an amazing array of species, is a beautiful area for exercise and quiet thought.
The Friends of the Nature Preserve is a nurturing group of faculty, students and community members that wishes to safeguard this urban jewel for both Binghamton University and the surrounding community. The group, hoping to promote greater awareness for the reserve, takes natural history walks and leads tours through the Nature Preserve. Its overall goals are education and preservation.Biweekly meetings are held by the Friends of the Nature Preserve, which include 10-minutenatural history discussions. Meeting schedules are posted on bulletin boards in the Science I (Environmental Studies/Geology) and Science III (Biology) buildings.
