CREDIT COURSES
SPRING 2008

General Information
All of our credit classes involve some weekend meeting times and/or overnight experiences. Our courses are designed to introduce the learner to new environments and adventure activities. Courses that require extended time in the field or that are designed for those with more skill are noted. All courses require instructor permission so that students have the best understanding of the time, personal commitment involved and fitness level needed. Outdoor activities and the lifestyle that accompanies them are not for everyone. These courses are designed for students in average physical condition.

Registration and Enrollment Policies
All courses have an additional fee that covers travel, group gear, equipment purchases, equipment repair, support staffing, permits and camping fees, as well as food and lodging in most cases. Undergraduate registration for Outdoor Pursuits credit bearing courses begins during the advanced registration period with NO priority given to class standing. After the second week of classes, enrollment is open to other members of the University community. Faculty, staff and non-students are welcome to participate in these courses however there is an additional $25 charge.

Credit Course Descriptions

HPEY 176 Fly Fishing (1 cr.)
Tuesday/Thursdays, 4:30-7:30 p.m., April 1 - May 8
Fishing Trips: Saturdays, April 12, 26 & May 3
Get "hooked" on the art of fly fishing. Learn the proper casting technique, field and stream safety, basic fly tying and entomology. Tie your own fly for the challenge of that first catch. Two local experts share their years of experience with you to make this one of the richest classes ever. Get involved in a sport that will last you a lifetime. Fee includes equipment, instruction and transportation. Students are responsible for obtaining their New York state fishing license.

For the aspiring weekend hiker interested on exploring the trails of the Southern Tier, but unsure where to go and how to be prepared. Emphasis is on conditioning and building endurance in preparation for a day-long mountain hike or peak ascent. Class sessions are used to hike the trails of the Nature Preserve and county parks. Discussion topics include backcountry nutrition, basic survival techniques, environmental ethics and wilderness wellness issues. Students learn to read a trail map, determine mileage and distance while stepping up the fun in their hike! Winter sections will be snowshoeing when the weather permits.

Regional Trail system - $125

HPEY 250 Bicycling (1 cr.)
Mondays, 3:30-6:30 p.m., March 31-May 5
Weekend Rides: Sundays, April 27 & May 4.
This course is designed to introduce the rider to a diversity of recreational riding opportunities with special emphasis on mountain biking. Students will learn the basics of bicycle repair and maintenance as they tune their own bikes. Basic riding techniques and skills (e.g. braking, signaling, gearing, weight transfer, single track riding) will start on campus and progress to trips throughout the area. Classroom sessions are a combination of presentations, demonstrations and hands-on experiences. Topics include conditioning, nutrition, training, safety and environmental impact issues. This course includes road rides and two mountain bike weekend outings. Fee includes transportation for class periods and outings.

HPEY 252 White Water Kayak I (1 cr.)
Section 1: Wednesdays, March12-May 7, 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Whitewater day trip: Saturday, May 3, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Section 2: Fridays, March 14-May 9, 3:30-6:30 p.m.
Whitewater day trip: Sunday, May 4, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
Are you interested in experiencing the thrill of maneuvering through white water or the quietness of a paddle and kayak as they slice still waters? Then this course might be for you. Learn to read the river, turn, peel out and wet exit! Time in the pool is combined with time on the open water to practice the fundamental skills and strokes needed to become a kayak paddler. One full day trip to an appropriate river will test your skills on class II whitewater. Strong swimming ability is essential.

HPEY 256 Backpacking II (2 cr.)
FIRST CLASS MEETING: Friday, May 2, 3:30-6:30 p.m.
MANDATORY Day Hike: Saturday, May 3, 9:00-5:00 p.m.

Backpacking Trip: Monday, May 19 through Friday, May 23
This course is an expedition! Designed for the graduates of Backpacking I (HPEY 178), it follows up on the basic principles of low-impact travel by exploring additional outdoor living skills necessary for trips of longer duration. The focus of instruction will be on advanced wilderness ethic with emphasis on safety and decision making. The course provides experiences for group leadership, practice of knots and tarp set-ups, menu planning and back country cooking, as well as map and compass skills. Expect to carry a 50-pound pack, hike 9-12 miles a day and share in an adventure! Participants should be prepared for the physical and mental rigors of extended backcountry living and travel. Previous experience is a MUST or completion of HPEY 178, HPEY 280 or HPE 245 in addition to instructor permission.

HPEY 260 Winter Travel Skills (1 cr.)
Fridays, February 1-29, 1:45-4:45 p.m.
Weekends: Sat., Feb. 2 & 16, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., xc skiing and snowshoeing
Overnight (weather permitting), Sat. Feb. 23 through Sun. 24
This course will introduce the participant to the special low-impact camping and travel techniques, equipment and clothing requirements for the winter environment. Activities will include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow shelter building. The topics of equipment selection and use, proper route, menu planning, nutrition and hydration for winter outings as well as snow safety will be covered. Classroom sessions and outings prepare the student for a weekend camping experience. This activity is physically demanding, but is designed to be within the capability of people in reasonably good condition and health. Students will learn to live in the out of doors in winter weather conditions, be required to carry a pack weighing approximately 50 pounds, and snow shoe approximately 3-7 miles. Fee includes instruction, equipment, transportation, permits or trail fees. Students are responsible for purchasing their snacks, trail food and synthetic long underwear.
